4th Annual “Creating a Culture of Character” Conference - March 17-22, 2012
The “Creating a Culture of Character” Conference is held annually in March. The conference is designed to support character excellence development throughout all community sectors encouraging the character-community concept. Character experts renowned in the fields of education, business, law enforcement, athletics and youth have presented to Western New York audiences encouraging dedication to nurturing character initiatives within their spheres of influence. Programs and speakers to inspire adults, as well as, middle and high school youth, are the focus of the annual conference.

Previous presenters include: Nick Vujicic, Life Without Limbs; Michele Borba (education); Ray Nash, Police Dynamics (law enforcement); Tom Hill, Kimray, Inc. (business); Steve Menzel, Character First!, (character communities); Mike Masters, Cross Training Football, (athletics and youth).

Featuring retired NFL player and Riverside native, Joe Ehrmann, the ”InSideOut® Coaching: How Sports Can Transform Lives” seminar is a full-day program designed to encourage others to accept responsibility, lead courageously, learn the importance of serving others, and develop a cause beyond oneself. ***Please note: This program is not suitable for students still in high school or younger and thus their attendance is strongly discouraged by the presenter.

This program will encompass a full-day character education training. Joe Ehrmann will be featured in the morning offering a follow-up session to the InSideOut Coaching Seminar- Day I. Presenting the afternoon session, “Training the Heart of a Champion from the Inside Out” will be Mike Masters from Cross Training Football, providing practical applications for intentionally integrating character into your everyday practice. ***Please note: These programs are not suitable for students still in high school or younger and thus their attendance is strongly discouraged by the presenters.

Champions for CHANGE is a leadership program that encourages youth to take a stand for character excellence. This full-day program formalizes a youth component to champion good character, encouraging youth to help lead the charge for creating a culture of character through the initiation of character councils within their high schools. The focus is to give a voice to teens regarding the expectation to strive for character excellence, thereby encouraging youth to become genuine character mentors.

Dignity for All - Anti-bullying Seminar

Target audience: Including but not limited to: PreK-16 Educators, administrators, and students of education from WNY Region

This program will marry the character development approach with the anti-bullying message for dealing with the problem of bullying within the school community. Beginning with a focus on the scope of the bullying problem by highlighting current issues, challenges and opportunities on the state and national level, this seminar will also offer a balanced overview of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, including the research and theory combined with practical applications. This session will provide guidance on the basic tenets of the program serving as a useful “first step” for any school considering implementation. The finale will illustrate a school district’s obligations for compliance (as currently available from NYS) with the Dignity For All Students Act, effective July 1, 2012, which will require school districts to revise codes of conduct and adopt policies to create a school environment free from harassment and discrimination, including cyber-bullying and sexting.
